On Pearl Harbor Day (Dec. 7), the Tanager grapplers traveled to Sioux Falls Roosevelt High School to compete in an early-season 9-team tournament.
Placing fourth, Vermillion was only beaten by much larger schools from the Sioux Falls area.
The Rough Riders, led by six individual champions, were victorious over the strong field from eastern South Dakota.
The Tanagers, with 179 team points, were led by three champions: Regan Bye (152 lbs.), Brett Bye (160 lbs.), and Alex Osborne (182 lbs.). Trey Hage (106 lbs.), Jack Husby (113 lbs.), and Karter Kratz (145 lbs.) scored valuable points with second place finishes. Brandon Hertz (170 lbs.) finished in third, while Kyle Seibel (120 lbs.) and Seth Heine (195 lbs.) finished in fourth.
The Vermillion team was able to finish ahead of Dakota XII foes West Central and Tea Area (underlined below). Counting their dual victory over Lennox on Dec. 3, they have defeated all three conference opponents that they have met so far this season.
Come to the Vermillion High School gym on Friday, Dec. 17 to watch them take on another conference foe, Dakota Valley, plus Brandon Valley and Yankton in the VHS Quadrangular.
1) Sioux Falls Roosevelt: 245.5; 2) Brandon Valley: 195.0; 3) Sioux Falls Washington: 182.0; 4) Vermillion: 179.0; 5) West Central: 131.0; 6) Unattached: 82.0; 7) Sioux Falls O’Gorman: 64.0; 8) Sioux Falls Lincoln: 48.0; 9) Tea Area: 46.0
