The Tanagers girls’ basketball team traveled up to Sioux Falls on Dec. 17 to take on an athletic Sioux Falls Christian team. The game became a tail of two halves, centered around defensive choices.
“We struggled containing them in the first half,” said Coach Jon Brooks. “In the second half we switched up our defense and went to more zone, and that’s when we went on our run.”
Senior Jose Huber led the team again with 18 points, 5 rebound and 4 steals. Hailiegh and Kyleigh Melstad each added 13 points each. Haliegh also had 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Kyleigh added 4 boards. Shantel French added 8 points and 3 assists.
“We got some good steals and turned those into points,” said Brooks. “We went on a 19-2 run in the third quarter to open the game up. The team got off to a slow start, but once we starting moving more in the second half we got some good looks and the girls stepped up and knocked them down.”
The team shot 25 for 60 from the field, for 41percent. Coach Brooks was happy how they were able to make some half-time adjustments secure their 2-1 record.
The girls’ squad finally gets to play at home on Friday when they host Crofton, NE at 7:45 p.m.
