Vermillion girls hold off Bon Homme 41-36

By Scott Bormann

It was an unlucky night for Bon Homme on Friday the 13th. It could not have been much closer throughout the game, with a halftime score of 16-15. The third quarter was no different at 27-26 for the Tanagers.

Plagued with shooting woes, the Tanagers were only 15 of 55 (27 percent) from the field.

“We got really good looks,” said Coach Jon Brooks, “they just wouldn’t fall. We only had 3 girls score. For us to only have 3 girls score, and still win, was pretty incredible.”

Josie Huber lead Vermillion in points and rebounds with 20 and 7, plus 4 steals. Haleigh Melstad had 18 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Sydney Peters had 3 points and 6 rebounds.

Kelsey Sutera led Bon Homme with 12 points and 16 rebounds. Liz Kubal scored 10 points.

“Our defense kept us in the game,” said Brooks. “We did a nice job shutting down their offense, and were just waiting to string together some points, but it never happened.”

Jose Huber put the Tanagers up for good by hitting a 15-foot baseline jumper with 45 seconds remaining in the game. She then hit a buzzer-beater to give Vermillion the 5-point victory.
