People across South Dakota found themselves fighting a losing battle against the elements on Thursday, Jan. 16. A fast moving cold front sweeping across the Northern Plains brought strong northwest winds gusting from 50 to 60 mph in some parts of the state that afternoon. The weather was not quite as severe in Vermillion – National Weather Reports indicate the wind is topping out, at times, at around 40 mph. The strong wind and occasional snow squalls brought near-blizzard conditions to the region at times, and made the trek miserable for University of South Dakota students crossing the campus early that afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, temperatures should climb into the 30s this weekend.
