On Jan 4, senior Tyrell Harper finally thawed out from his recent move from Florida. He led the Tanagers to a 5-0 start for the season by scoring 16 points and grabbing 13 boards for a great double-double.
Fellow senior Nick Jensen added 13 points and 7 rebounds. Tri-Valley (3-2) was led by Brendon Boomsma with 14 points.
“We didn’t play as well as we would have liked,” said Coach Jay Drake, “but we were able to contain Brendan Boomsma for Tri-Valley and limit his looks and we did a good job outscoring them 13-2 in the fourth quarter to get a nice Dakota 12 Conference win.”
The Tanagers got out to a great start, doubling up Tri-Valley’s first quarter score (14-7). The Mustangs outscored the Tanagers in the second and third quarters, but the Tanagers crushed them down the stretch.
Cooper Williams added 7 points and 3 rebounds. Carter Andre scored 4 points, while Jeremiah Johnson had 4 points and 3 rebounds. Jayce Huska added 2 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. Jacob Manger grabbed 3 boards.
A major factor in the victory was Vermillion’s total dominance on the boards. The Tanagers grabbed 16 offensive and 18 defensive rebounds for a total of 34, while the Mustangs could only manage a total of 11 rebounds (5 offensive/6 defensive).
“We must continue to improve as a team,” said Drake, “but our coaching staff feels our guy have worked hard this first month of the season and have gotten us off to a good start on the year.”
The boys’ squad goes to Elk Point/Jefferson (0-4) Jan. 7, host West Central (0-5) Jan. 9, then travel to Parkston on (5-0) Jan. 10.
