The Downtown Vermillion Action Team (DVAT) raised $1,116.00 for the Vermillion Food Pantry through its Money Tree for Pantry campaign. KVHT assisted in support through advertising and a live announcement of the winner of the gift basket on air. This year the DVAT put together a grand prize gift basket worth over $800 that was made up of donations from downtown businesses. Every dollar donated to the Money Tree for Pantry entered the donor into the drawing. Leon Smith won the grand prize and was truly delighted. Downtown businesses came out in full force to support this effort both by donating a prize, but by getting donations also. Everyone who donated even one dollar was a true winner as they helped out their neighbor by doing so.
The food pantry shelves were full when DVAT members presented the check to Mary Berglin, who has been running the pantry for over 25 years. She said that during the holidays that is the case, as more people often make donations during that time. What is sometimes forgotten is that the food pantry serves people year round. Money donated from the DVAT and other groups and individuals who donate is used to supplement the months when the donations just do not come in. The middle of the summer, for example, Mary said the shelves look quite different. The food pantry serves nearly 5,000 people per year in Vermillion. Over 450 people were served in November 2013, according to Mary.
