The Vermillion girls’ basketball team was able to win an ugly game against Lennox on Jan. 24. With not many things going well for the home team, they were still able to prevail 45-37.
“It was an ugly game, but we got the win,” said Coach Jon Brooks.
Josie Huber led the Tanagers (8-4) to victory by being the high-scorer on the night with 20 points, grabbing six rebounds and four assists. Haleigh Melstad added 10 points, three rebounds and two steals.
“Lennox was a tough game,” said Brooks. “They are a very physical team and play hard. I thought our girls matched that, and that was crucial.”
Jessica Herrboldt led the Orioles (4-6) by scoring 10 points, four rebounds and two steals. Taylor Anderson grabbed the most rebounds of the night with seven.
“We didn’t shoot the ball very well,” said Brooks, “but when you don’t shoot well and still win, that means we did other stuff to win the game.”
Tori Gregoire scored five points and grabbed three steals. Shantel French had four points, two rebounds and one assist. Two points each were scored by Kyleigh Melstad, Hailey Freidel and Sidney Peters. Freidel also grabbed five boards, while Peters had three and Melstad had two. Melstad added four steals and one assist, and Peters had two steals.
“We played really good defense, and rebounded with them,” said Brooks. “Down the stretch they hit a couple three’s but we responded by being smart with the ball and knocking down some free-throws.”
The girls’ hoops team still have to make up for the postponed game in Lennox on Feb. 7. They next go to Hartford to take on West Central (8-2) on Jan. 28, then host Dell Rapids (4-6) on Jan. 30.
