The Sioux City North Stars visited Vermillion on Jan. 17 and got off to a soaring start. Then the Tanager defense got warmed up and sent the stars down in flames 75-48.
“We gave up 20 points in the first quarter, then only 28 for the rest of the game, so our defense really picked up,” said Coach Jon Brooks. “When we play well defensively, it helps out our offense so much.”
The Tanagers were led by Josie Huber with 23 points, three rebounds and three steals. Haleigh Melstad scored 15 points, one rebound, and five steals. Kyleigh Melstad added 14 points, one rebound and one steal.
“At the beginning of the game, we were having trouble defending Folchert,” said Brooks, “but once we focused on getting her stopped we were much more successful.”
For Sioux City North, Breonia Farris cashed in 19 points and 9 rebounds. Shawna Folchert tallied 17 points and three rebounds.
“We gave up 20 points in the first quarter then only 28 for the rest of the game, so our defense really picked up,” said Brooks. “When we play well defensively, it helps out our offense so much.”
The Tanagers were helped by Rachel Finnegan, Kasey Jensen, Sydney Peters and Twila Sweeney, all scoring 4 points. Tori Gregoire, Hailey Freidel and Autumn Barnett all scored two points. Maddie Regnerus added one point for the home team.
Vermillion was out-rebounded 21-28, but they had a very balanced effort. Gregoire, Freidel, Peters, Huber and Sweeney each grabbed three boards.
“This was a good win for us coming off of a tough loss from Tuesday,” said Brooks. “We got back to pressuring the ball and playing solid defense and running in transition. We were able to get some easy lay ups on fast breaks, which we need.”
Vermillion hosts Elk Point/Jefferson (7-1) on Jan. 21, and Lennox (4-5) on Jan. 24. The Jan. 16 game in Lennox was postponed to Feb. 7 because of the windy weather on Thursday.
