CANTON – Securing a 32-point victory over a regional and conference foe on the road is always considered a good day’s work. That is exactly what Vermillion’s girls’ basketball team did on Jan. 9.
“We had 3 players in double figures, which was nice,” said Coach Jon Brooks. “Overall we shot the ball well and had a good offensive night.”
Haleigh Melstad scored 19 points, Josie Huber with 16, and Kyleigh Melstad with 10. Each Melstad also had one rebound, while Huber grabbed 7 boards. Josie and Haleigh each had 5 steals, while Kyleigh had one.
“This was a good conference road win for us,” said Brooks. “Canton has a nice team this year, and we knew we needed to play well to get a victory.”
Canton was led by Kristen Twedt with 19 points, the only double-digit scorer for the C-Hawks.
“Our defense needs to continue to improve, but we did a nice job getting stops when we went to our zone,” said Brooks. “We tried putting some pressure on, and Canton did a nice job breaking it, so had to make a change.”
Twila Sweeney had a great night coming off the bench by added 8 points, 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Sydney Peters had 6 points and 4 rebounds. Shantel French had 5 points, one rebound and one steal.
Hailey Freidel added 4 points and 3 rebounds. Tori Gregoire, Autumn Barnett, and Kasey Jensen each scored 2 points. Maddie Regnerus scored one point and grabbed one board.
“The third quarter was big for us and is where we made some separation,” said Brooks. “Good job by our girls.”
