LENNOX – The song was sweet for the Orioles on Jan. 17 when they handed the Tanagers their first loss of the season by a 44-42 score. That leaves Sioux Valley (10-0) and Madison (9-0) as the only remaining Class A undefeated teams in South Dakota.
Carter Andre led the Tanagers in the loss with 13 points, 2 rebounds and a steal. Jayce Huska was the only other Tanager to score in double-figures with 10 points, 2 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists.
Dereck DeVries scored 11 points and grabbed five boards to lead Lennox past Vermillion on Friday night. The home team won the battle of the boards 23-18.
Both teams hit 8 free-throws. Vermillion outscored Lennox 22-12 from 2-point range, but Lennox doubled-up Vermillion from behind the arc, scoring 24 versus 12 points, to allow them to squeak past for the win.
Nick Jensen scored 8 points and grabbed 3 rebounds. Tyrell Harper scored 6 points, 8 boards, one steal and 4 assists. Jeremiah Johnson had three points and one assist. Cooper Williams scored two points, grabbed two rebounds and had 5 assists.
The Tanager team is eager for payback if they meet the Orioles in the inaugural Dakota XII Conference Classic in Tea on Feb. 8. Their only other chance to avenge this loss will be if they meet during the Region 4A Tournament (in early March) while they are determining which teams will play in the State A Tourney in Sioux Falls March 20-22.
Vermillion hosts Elk Point/Jefferson (3-5) on Jan. 21 before traveling to Sioux Falls Christian (6-3) on Jan 23.
