USD med student named Carter Global Health Fellow by AMWA

Martha Holstein, a second year medical student at the University of South Dakota Sanford School of Medicine, has been selected as a 2013-15 Anne C. Carter Global Health Fellow by the American Medical Women’s Associations (AMWA).

The Anne C. Carter Global Health Fellowship is a two-year fellowship that offers four AMWA medical student members the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the practice of international medicine during their medical education. Fellows spend their first year engaging in peer mentoring, and educational meetings to support them during the implementation of their local global health projects. The second year is focused on preparing the fellows to engage in an international service-learning experience.

“We are very impressed with this year’s cohort as each student brings their own unique perspective and creative approach to improving global health,” said Judy Gbadebo, AMWA Global Health National Chair. “Not only are these outstanding fellows dedicated to addressing international health needs, they continually serve as role models within their respective communities, promoting empowerment of women in the field of medicine.”

Additional Carter Global Health Fellows named this year are from the Duke University School of Medicine, Drexel University School of Medicine, and the Feinberg School of Medicine of Northwestern University. Holstein, a native of Fairfax, S.D., is currently interested in primary care with an interest in decreasing the health disparities among populations in her home state and around the world. She received her B.S. degree in biology from South Dakota State University. Between the Sanford School of Medicine and SDSU, Holstein studied Type 1 Diabetes in the Sanford Project as a research assistant and lab manager.

AMWA is an organization which functions at the local, national and international level to advance women in medicine and improve women’s health.
